Interstate and New Zealand Teachers

This page is for qualified teachers in another Australian state 
or in New Zealand looking to make their next career move extraordinary in the Northern Territory. 

Whether you’re after meaningful community impact, career growth, or a lifestyle change, the NT offers it all - and making the move is easier than you might think!

 

Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

To be eligible to teach in the NT, you must:

  • Be a qualified classroom teacher
  • Have passed the National Literacy and Numeracy Test - LANTITE (if you completed your initial teacher education in Australia after 1 July 2016)

You’ll also need:

  • A Northern Territory teacher registration (see Mutual Recognition below)
  • A Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
Step 2: Register to Teach in the NT (Mutual Recognition)

If you’re registered in another Australian state, territory, or New Zealand, you can apply for NT registration through Mutual Recognition — a simple and streamlined process.

To apply:

  1. Complete Form B via the Teacher Registration Board of the NT (TRB)
  2. Include:
  • A certified copy of your current teaching registration
  • A certified copy of your academic transcript
  1. Submit the application to the TRB (by post or in person)

Step 3: Apply for Jobs in the NT

There are three main ways to apply for teaching positions:

✅Apply for an Advertised Job

✅ Join the Teacher Recruitment Pool

This is a central pool schools use to fill vacancies year-round.

  • Search for Job Number 104487 on the NT Government Jobs site or visit Jobs - Classroom Teacher Recruitment Pool
  • Submit your application with your CV and referees - you’ll need to register for an eRecruit account.

✅ Contact a School Directly

Have a location in mind? Reach out to the school directly to express interest.
Use the NT Education Directory to find contact details.

  • Tip: Include a current resume and the names of at least two referees (ideally principals or assistant principals). If you're a recent graduate, your final practicum report can take the place of referee reports.
Step 4: Assessment and Selection

If you apply to the recruitment pool, the Teach in the Territory team will assess your application, verify documents, and contact referees. If successful, you'll be activated in the pool and considered for vacancies across the NT.

Schools using the merit-based selection process may:

  • Contact you directly for an interview
  • Conduct further referee checks

Your skills, experience, and potential are all considered under the NT Government’s merit selection principles.

Step 5: Offer and Onboarding

If you’re successful:

  • You’ll receive a formal offer
  • Your employment contract will be prepared
  • You’ll need to finalise your NT registration and Ochre Card before starting

 

If you are unsuccessful at any stage, you will be notified promptly.
